Mindset Tools for Creatives - Part 1: Intentions

As an empowerment photographer & mindset coach, it is integral to keep my own mindset in check so I can show up and do the work for my clients. Over the next few days I am going to be sharing with you my favorite tools that I use to keep on track, focused, and in a relatively positive (or at least resilient) mindset.

Tool 1: intention setting

Intentions are present and future focused thoughts designed to keep us showing up in a way that encourages us to be the best versions of ourselves. For me, I use my art journal in the morning and write out how I want to show up for the day and depending on what I am doing or who I am working with I will adjust my intention to serve the project or person the best. Throughout the day if I find myself getting distracted, I will grab sticky notes and write out my intentions to get my brain back into gear. Usually it is easier for us to become distracted: towards the end of the work day, if we are thirsty, and if we are trying to avoid doing something we just don’t like or fear - redirecting the brain back to the intention we set for our day helps keep you accountable to that intention.

Below are 10 of my top favorite intentions. You will notice that they tend to start with I AM or I WILL - this gives me the responsibility of moving forward and channeling those thoughts, beliefs or ideas. I write out these in addition to others if I am working on other areas of my life, but I will spend a good 10-20 minutes doodling and writing out my intentions. If I am pressed for time, however, I will grab a pad of sticky notes and a sharpie write them out and stick them around. There is, however, no right or wrong way, the main thing is to implement intention setting DAILY - regardless of how it gets done, the point is, I get it done!
