Blocks: Get That Money, Honey - Pt.1

Yesterday I introduced you to the concept of BLOCKS, things that get in your way that aren’t really about the thing getting in your way and we broke down the importance of understanding real vs. perceived blocks. When it comes to money, you simply desiring more, manifesting more and setting intentions for more will not make the REAL blocks that are in your way any easier (on the whole marginalized folks tend to get paid less and the more intersections of marginalization, the less money they make - of course there are exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, this is the case). I think it’s important to note that becoming financially independent is a huge fuck you to the patriarchy, specifically for folks socialized as women, anyone in the 2SLGBTQIA, and Black, Indigenous, or People of Color - so let’s GET THAT COIN, BABY!

In this blog post, we want to focus on the perceived blocks and showcase some strategies to break through the block focusing on WHY we desire money in the first place!

Before we get going, I want to let you know that if this was 6 months ago, I wouldn’t have even dreamed about writing this post because my money blocks were equivalent to the Rocky Mountains. I want to get vulnerable for a second and let you know that it’s good I’m a successful business person because I wasn’t very good with keeping money. The following skills I am going to lay out are things that I have read, learned, and implemented and have shifted my own relationship with money - and in 6 months I would say that my Rocky Mountain has been chipped down to more a moss covered hill - so while I am not all the way there, I can tell you the shift in my mindset and behaviours is significantly different than a year ago!

Get Clear On The Outcome You Want

Imagine getting in your car ready to go and you pull up the GPS and say “GIVE ME DIRECTIONS” - what do you think is going to happen? Not much of anything. You can’t have clear defined directions if you have no idea where you are heading. Shit, you can’t even have a jumbly sorta path lined out because you literally could go anywhere and everywhere. This is how most of us do most things - we let life happen to us instead of taking control. So, the first step with money blocks is deciding on what is the outcome you desire? WHY do you want to shift your money mindset? HOW much money is enough? WHAT will you do with it? etc. Here is the outcome that I wrote for myself:

I will know I have overcome my money blocks when I am able to consistently keep a minimum of $10,000 in my checking account. I will be financially comfortable when I am able to take 3 big trips a year that I don’t have to work through to pay for them (and I won’t have to use my credit card!). I will be confident in my money mindset when I am able to recognize where, when, what and why I am impulsively purchasing and then make strategic steps to work through the thoughts needed to make a decision that will help me maintain my goal of $10,000 minimum in my checking account. I will be able to donate $1000/month to the Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre. I will be putting $500/biweekly into my investments. I will be able to prioritize the following: debt repayment, paying Jill full time hours to work for me, bills/groceries, investments, fun spending.

I have this written out in my journal, but also above my computer where I do the majority of my online spending. Once you are able to recognize what you want money for, how much you need, how much you want to donate and why, what are your monetary priorities, etc. then it can make you more emotionally invested in the goal of working through your financials.

Questions to ask:

*What do you want money for?
*What will it feel like when you overcome your money blocks? What will you be doing?
*How would you LIKE to prioritize your spending?
*What is the dollar amount you want to keep consistently in your bank account?

Tomorrow we will be going on a journey to unravel where your money journey began and how it continues to impact you today - but for now, start with the above questions and get percolating!
