The Wild World of AI

Would you believe the image above was created by AI simply using my prompts of: woman in a wildflower field with puffy clouds and waterfall ?

We all know technology moves at a rapid pace, but being introduced to this AI beta test project is both fascinating, terrifying and all around magical. As someone who is an artist, it makes me wonder about the future of my art….will photography still be a viable career in the future? Will people still want folks to photograph things for them? Will they still want painters to paint? etc. As technology progresses in this field, it is going to get smarter and smarter, but it can never be smarter than the collective folks who feed it data.

What I mean by this is, it’s progressing whether we want it to or not…kind like time. So, we can either choose to adopt and adapt and see how we can use this type of process for good, understanding that, yes there will always be folks that use this type of progression for evil, but that’s EXACTLY why we need folks to learn how to use it for good. You can’t find on a battlefield if you don’t even know how to keep your wits about you within it.

Personally, I am choosing to see the positives that this can have on my work. I am feeling the same surge of creativity for photographers and painters that I felt when we realized webcam sessions could be a thing. We have a new medium that is similar to our medium, but different enough that it excites us to learn something new and challenge our minds to think differently. I’ve seen folks create whole backgrounds, cities, and storylines as a result of the outputs from the AI and as for me, I’m been so inspired by challenges, the way it creates specific wardrobe or composites things together in ways that maybe I never would have comprehended. I can feel it pushing the limits of what we deem to be “good” or “bad” or otherwise and just says “This is what you asked me for”.

If you are interested in learning more or trying it out yourself, my buddy Pratik created an awesome tutorial to help folks get started (he’s always an amazing teacher, willing to share knowledge) so I recommend starting there. I will admit, I was a little overwhelmed at the prospect of having to learn how to use Discord or try something that looked very daunting, but his tutorial was incredibly step by step and helpful.

Here are a few other creations that the AI output as a result of my prompts:
