The Portrait Masters Conference

Some of the key takeaways!

To put the MOTION in eMOTION, add some blur:

For fringe/tassles/sparkles shoot at 1/60th shutter speed and adjust your aperture and iso accordingly

For smooth fabrics/patterns shoot at 1/100th shutter speed and adjust your aperture and iso accordingly

For static poses:

Shoot with a shutter speed no slower than the length of your lens (if you are shooting with a 200mm lens, your shutter should be no slower than 1/200th)

Focus on a wide open aperture (2.8-5.6) to get that beautiful softness

Throw gender out the window:

Pose for emotion/vibe instead of (perceived) genitals

Use light, angles, and wardrobe to communicate desired mood/way your subject wants to feel.

Prompts for Movement:

“Imagine you are 7 years old and you got a new dress, what is the first thing you would do?”

“Tippy Toe across the floor like a ballerina while stretching your hands to the sky”

[Put on their favorite song]
”Swoosh the fabric! Throw it high into the sky! Step up and grab it! And twirl, twirl, twirl!”
