Postcard Poetry circa 2003

I was recently purging my home when I came across some old writing I did back in 2003 for my University Creative Writing Class. It’s wild to think that this is almost 20 years ago now!! WHAT?? In any case, I thought it would be fun to share with you A)the fact that I have always written - ever since I was a little kid and B)the writing that I did. Are they good poems? I dunno. Does my Google translated Spanish make sense? Probably not. But they are where I was at the time. I had returned from my first International trip to Mexico for spring break and had a handful of postcards. For our final project, we had to submit about 10 different items of writing and they encouraged us to think beyond just creatively writing ON the page and rather to think about what mediums we used. I figured out how to feed postcards through my printer and created these little ditties. I think what I love most about writing, is that it truly is a time capsule - waiting for you to unearth the mindset and stage of growth you had at the time. Whether it’s a shopping list, poem, novel, or otherwise, writing tells us more about our past selves than we ever could.
